666

posted on Tuesday, June 06, 2006 11:25 AM

Well, this only happens once a century and it's here today. 06/06/2006 or 666 in for short. Personally I think that number has received a bad wrap over the years. Sure it's the Number of the Beast and all, but did you know all of it's other important references?

  • 666 is an abundant number. It is the sum of the squares of the first seven prime numbers.
  • In base 10, 666 is a palendromic number, a repdigit, and a Smith number.
  • If you assign each letter of the alphabet a number, e.g A=100, B=101, etc. Spelling "Hitler" will add up to 666 (OK, this one isn't so good...).
  • 666 is the value of the kilohertz frequency of the Bodenseesender, a big AM radio station in South Germany
  • In the US, '666' is a brand name of cough syrup.
  • 666 is the port number used by the game Doom.
  • On a Unix file system, a file permission of 666 grants all users read and write permissions on the file.
  • 666 is the sum of all the numbers on a typical roulette wheel.
  • The Roman numeral representation of the number 666 (DCLXVI) uses once each of the Roman numeral symbols with values under 1000 and they occur in exact reverse order of the respective values (D=500, C=100, L=50, X=10, V=5, I=1).
  • Combining one of each of Japan's coin currency yields 666 (500, 100, 50, 10, 5, 1)
  • Apples first computer, the Apple 1, was priced at $666.66.
  • Organic molecules are based on carbon-12, with 6 Protons, 6 Neutrons, and surrounded by 6 Electrons.
  • In Chinese, '666' sounds a lot like the words "Things going smoothly". It is considered one of the luckiest numbers in Chinese culture. It can be seen prominently in many shop windows across the country and people there often pay extra to get a mobile phone number including this string of digits

So, the next time you are in China and see 666 blasted up and down the streets, it's a good thing...

Oh, by the way, if you happen to be in Hell, Michigan this 666, make sure you stop by the special 666 celebration. Get involved with the costume compitetion and live music. There's fun to be had for all!

HAPPY 666

-Joe

Gravatar Eine besondere Bedeutung kommt
höchstens der Schnapszahl 666
zu, die in der Offenbarung des

Gravatar It is interesting that China has taken 666 and turned it into a lucky number. Such a different view on things than Christians have!

This one started slow but I got really got into it about 1/3 of the way through. If you are an Ender's Game fan, you'll probably like this one as well.
