It was twenty years ago today, Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play... Well, maybe a bit more than twenty years, but I love that song anyway. Actually it's almost twice twenty years since 1969 (but who's counting?). Today I posted my 1969th post to the forums and since 1969 was a pretty significant year for me, I thought I would throw in a bit of almanac trivia. So, here it goes... All of the following happened in 1969: - The Jets win SuperBowl III.
- Led Zeppelin releases their first album, "Led Zeppelin".
- Richard Nixon is sworn in as the 37th President of the US.
- The Beatles gave their last public performance, on the roof of Apple Records.
- NASA launches Apollo 9 to test the lunar module.
- Barbara Streisand and Katherine Hepburn TIE for the Best Actress Oscar.
- NASA launches Apollo 10 - first dress rehearsal for a full Moon landing.
- The rock opera "Tommy" by the Who is released.
- John Lennon and Yoko Ono conduct their Bed-In in Montreal, Quebec
- Hee Haw debuts on CBS.
- Singer/Actress Judy Garland dies.
- The Stonewall riots in NYC mark the start of the modern gay rights movement in the U.S.
- The film "Easy Rider" premiers.
- NASA launches Apollo 11 and successfully lands the first man on the Moon.
- Richard Nixon declares the Nixon Doctrine - basically starting the "Vietnamization" of the Vietnam war.
- Members of a cult led by Charles Manson do some really bad things...
- The "Woodstock" concert is held in upstate New York.
- The first ATM machine in the U.S. is installed in Rockville Center, New York.
- H.R. Pufnstuf first airs on NBC.
- Monty Python's Flying Circus airs it's first episode on the BBC.
- The Beatles release "Abbey Road".
- The pilot episode of "The Brady Bunch" airs on U.S. TV.
- The "miracle" New York Mets win the World Series.
- Willard S. Boyle and George Smith invent the CCD at Bell Laboratories (used in today's digital cameras).
- The first message was sent over ARPANET, the forerunner of the Internet.
- Wal-Mart incorporates.
- The Children's Television Workshop educational program Sesame Street premiers in the U.S.
- Color television broadcasts begin on BBC1 and ITV in the U.K.
- NASA sends Apollo 12 to the moon.
- Soccer great Pele scores his 1,000th goal.
- The first draft lottery in the U.S. is held since World War II.
- The Boeing 747 makes it's debut flight from Seattle, WA to New York City.
- And finally, I was born!
Oh, and as an added coincidence, I just happened to make my 1969th post on my actual birthday (Nov 27th)! Bizarre...
