HomePage at the Speed of Light
posted on Thursday, May 15, 2008 3:49 PM

As work days go by, I get into a routine of doing my weekly stuff: blogs, videos, tech tips, forum posts, labs projects, etc and I rarely stop to smell the roses.  We'll I've been doing that a little bit more as of late.  Now, don't get me wrong, I'm still working on those iControl articles, but I'm taking time to look at the big picture more and more.

One thing that stuck out to me is the speed with which the DevCentral homepage has been moving.  I didn't realize how fast it was moving until I tried to find a post I did two days ago and saw it wasn't on the homepage anymore.  In fact, items on our homepage don't stay there for long and I'm finding that if you don't get to them in a day or so, they'll be shuffled off into the pager.

That got me to thinking, how much content are we producing here?  Now, this is by no means technically accurate and is just an assumption by my homepage viewing, so please don't go and start citing this data as fact.

Let's assume that an item lasts on the homepage for 2 days (which, I think is on the long end).  That would make 5 items per day since the homepage is 10 items long.  Also, let's assume that it stays constant through the work year.  How many pieces of content would that be?

5 items/day * 5 days/work week * 52 weeks/year = 1300 items/year

Now that's not quite the speed of light, but it is a lot of content if I do say so myself.  Oh, and that's not counting the wiki and forum updates either.

So, if anyone ever told you that DevCentral wasn't a wealth of knowledge, then tell them to check out the homepage.  Each day you will get a new dose of something new.  Whether it's a blog post or a technical article or a podcast or a video interview, there is bound to be something interesting on a daily basis.

Oh, and don't worry, search is very accurate so odds are if you enter a term like "Cookie Encryption", you'll find the most relevant content at the tips of your fingers!

Now, what are you waiting for, head over to the homepage and see what's new!

-Joe
