 DevCentral Tokyo - Day 2
posted on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 9:30 PM

Jeff and I just finished Day number 2 in Tokyo, and what a day it was.  We woke up to a typhoon outside with blistering rain and wind.  We hit the coffee shop and killed some time waiting for a colleague to meet us in the lobby of the hotel.

We then headed out to the F5 offices and got settled in catching up on DevCentral stuff.  Our original plan was to do some sightseeing this morning but due to the weather we opted to actually be a bit productive.  One thing that I did happen to notice was that the Japan groups marketing literature was awesome!  I'll scan in some images and post them on a follow up blog post and you'll see what I mean.  We need to find the artist that drew those and get him to do some DevCentral promotional materials.

At around 3:00, Jeff and I went on the wild side and took a couple of trains to get us to Akihabara where they claim people come to wheel and deal in discounted electronic products.  After going, I'm not sure that they have the same meaning of the word "discounted" than I do as the prices were much higher than back in the US.  I really wanted to buy something but couldn't justify paying more here than at home.  But, even though I didn't buy anything, just the sightseeing was well worth the trip down.  Plus, we only got "Lost in Translation" a couple times on the way back which I think was pretty good considering it was our first time.  The two takeaways I have from taking the trains are: 1) There are a ton of people no matter the time of day that are taking the trains; and 2) You never have to wait more than a couple of minutes to catch any train.  Very fun experience!

After heading back from Akihabara, we met a couple of F5 folks for dinner at a Korean Barbeque place that was very very good.  Our colleagues kept what we were eating a mystery until after we tried it which was kind of fun.  I enjoyed everything except the intestines which I think I'll pass on next time.  The big thing about this dinner was that you got to cook the meat yourself.  I think we actually surprised our associates that we liked the spicy stuff: Kim-Che, Wasabi, etc.  All in all, another excellent meal with some great conversations.

After what seemed like hours of eating, oh yeah - it was hours of eating, and drinking we stumbled back to the hotel to grab some shut-eye.  I posted the  DevCentral Daily before bed and hit the sack.

End of Day 2.

-Joe
