Social Media ABC's - J is for Jargon
posted on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 11:33 AM

socialmedia Welcome to my series of blog posts on the ABC's of Social Media, a tool that you can use to make you more "hip" in the world of Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn (just to name a few).  Today's letter is "J". There weren't too many social media words starting with "J".  There were some technical terms such as JSON and JavaScript but those didn't seem to fit.  So, I went with a more general term that is used in social media every day: Jargon.

"J" is for Jargon

corporate_jargon Jargon

Pronounced: Jahr-guh n

Jargon is terminology that relates to a specific activity, profession or group. Much like slang it develops as a kind of shorthand, to quickly express ideas that are frequently discussed between members of a group. In many cases a standard term may be given a more precise or specialized usage among practitioners of a field. In many cases this may cause a barrier to communication as many may not understand (for example leetspeek).

Social Media has it's own Jargon and this series of articles is a starting point for you to get up to speed on them.
