 Acceleration ABCs
posted on Friday, September 26, 2008 1:56 PM

Being a guest speaker on today's podcast I finally received the inspiration I've needed to really get into blogging on DevCentral.  I have stolen Joe's ideas of an ABC series and will be starting a series on the ABCs of acceleration.  The list of topics is almost complete, there are a couple of blank spaces so if you have any ideas on topics for the letters G,K,N,Q or Z feel free to forward them along.

Gravatar G is for Gzip compression
K is encryption key size and why SSL offload is important to accleration
N is for the number of connections that a browser session opens and why a larger number is better for acceleration
Q is for QoS but with BIG-IP this is covered with the Rate Shaping Module
Z is for zero latency and how this can be achieved by not having to send it in the first place

Gravatar G is for Green (you could talk about how acceleration is also a green technology)
K is for Knowledge (you really have to know the details of an app if you want to maximize its acceleration)
N is for NTP (most acceleration techniques require agreeing what time it is)
Q is for Questions (what are the common questions you will need to answer about an app in order to accelerate it?)
Z is for Zebra (there is a saying that when you hear hoof beats you should look for a horse and not a zebra - plenty of people get caught up in thinking/desiring exotic ways to achieve acceleration when often, the simple methods are good enough)
