 More iRules logging enhancements!

logging

LTM 9.4.3 hf3 and LTM v9.4.4 include support for remote syslog messages larger than 1K.  The new maximum message size is configurable up to 64K, as per the recent IETF Draft proposed by the syslog Working Group. (1K was the maximum message size previously defined in RFC3164).

A simple iRule may be used to send iRules-generated log messages to a remote log syslog server rather than the local syslog service. For details on using the log command in an iRule to log remotely, check out my article about recent iRules enhancements to the "log" command.

Gravatar How does one get the LTM to send log messages of that size... ours seems to be truncating at ~1k. We are running 9.4.4.

Gravatar Check out AskF5 SOL8306: Syslog enhancement supports larger message sizes sent to remote syslog servers. It shows you how to set a db variable to enable larger message support: https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/8000/300/sol8306.html

It contains this note: "The following db variable is only used for increasing the message log size for messages sent to a remote syslog server that is not located on the management network."

iRules log messages may only be sent to a TMM routable address, not a management routed address. You can configure a remote syslog server that is TMM routable.

It also says: "Local message logging is still limited to 1024 bytes in size."
