Stephanie interned this summer at F5’s San Jose offices.  She is headed back to school to continue her EECS (pronounced EEKs according to Stephanie) degree at UC Berkeley.  Before she got out the door, Colin and I cornered her for a few minutes to discuss her internship, her goals, and her work with F5 on the Application Policy Manager team.

Throughout the summer, Stephanie has been busy developing custom solutions for the APM login process.  Below is a list of several solutions I had the privilege to publish on her behalf:

IT organizations in every industry face a common set of challenges as they work to keep the business up and running. Like many companies, F5 Networks was experiencing a host of problems related to the rapid growth of unstructured file data. Spending on storage was rising quarterly, routine management tasks required frequent user interruptions and backups were taking 96 hours to complete.

After adding the ARX technology to its product portfolio via an acquisition, F5 put the solution to work in its own environment. Listen to this podcast to hear F5 CIO and Vice President of IT John Matthews explain how the ARX solution enabled the company to dramatically reduce storage costs, even as data storage continued to grow. Through the use of intelligent file management, the IT team slashed backup times to just 4 hours. Downtime is a rare occurrence instead of a regular event, and the IT organization was able to introduce vendor diversity into its environment. The icing on the cake for a CIO? An ROI of less than 4 months.

The virtualization of network and application network infrastructure is the second wave of the virtualization tsunami to hit the shores of the data center. Unlike server virtualization, because of its unique role in the data center, Application Delivery Controller (ADC) virtualization brings with it architectural implications that make a simple virtual-for-physical replacement strategy unacceptable. But there are appropriate places across the data center and organization where virtualized ADCs can be leveraged as stand-alone solutions, as well as in conjunction with its physical predecessor, to enable a more dynamic data center without compromising reliability, scalability, and performance.
