Community voting has now closed. Thanks to all who voted. I'll update you all later when we find out how many of the sessions mentioed below are approved and scheduled for OpenStack Summit. See you in late April.

First off, is our own John Gruber presenting a session titled Telecom Customer Use Case: Scaling NFV Workloads with LBaaS-integrated SDN Fabric along with Prashant Gandhi, VP Products & Strategy, Big Switch Networks.

Here is the abstract:

As OpenStack and NFV adoption accelerates in service providers and enterprise environments, users require a modern network infrastructure at L2-L3 and L4-7 layers. Instead of legacy box-by-box networking which is mostly proprietary and complex, OpenStack’s agility and commodity principles demand SDN-style fabric-wide controllability for an operationally simple, highly responsive and programmable L2-L3 network.  Simultaneously, to ensure application scaling and availability, L4-7 load balancing functionality is necessary and requires end-to-end automation within OpenStack. In this session, we will analyze merits of how a telecom customer is deploying F5’s load balancing as a service (LBaaS) integrated with Big Switch’s Big Cloud Fabric, an SDN Clos fabric built with open networking switches for delivering agile and cost-optimized L2-L7 solution for OpenStack NFV deployments.

Here is the abstract:

SDN for OpenStack should provide network agility via in-kernel based functions coupled with insertion of advanced services from L2 to L7. With OpenStack adoption growing exponentially the range of applications, use cases and scenarios deployed on top of it is evolving as well. In particular, the majority of the use cases require support for LBaaS functionality. In this session we will concentrate on the LB scenario and discuss

  • the role components like Neutron/Nova/LBaaS-plugin/Network Nodes play in the overall solution
  • the different insertion models available (inside and outside of OpenStack) based on different LB form factors
  • the integration of LB within the SDN layer including service function chaining and native VXLAN support in the LB appliance
  • key requirements for deployment of LB like small footprint, automated deployment, management and monitoring, HA

Session will conclude with a demo that will show rich multi-tenant service offerings with kernel & appliance-based Network Functions

How about hearing from @ShawnWormke the Director of F5’s OpenStack Product Development efforts. He has a session titled:  Embracing Open Source: Lessons Learned.

Here is the abstract:

Open Source technologies have the power to enable your organization to scale and enable the broader community to develop key integration tools for your products.  This session will cover not only the technical challenges to embracing open source but also the organizational and cultural challenges found when a proprietary Software Organization (ISV) embraces open source tools and software. We will discuss the new ways that F5 as an organization had to adapt our development, legal, and services\support organization to embrace the open source challenge. This presentation will review some lessons learned and provide other organizations ways to overcome internal objections to embracing an open source model.  We will discuss how when used effectively, open source tools can allow an ISV to scale their offerings, engage customers more fully in the development process and ensure greater brand loyalty.

Telco Service Providers (SPs) are eager to address the challenges of moving from monolithic networking systems to a more flexible, virtualized platform.  The OpenStack platform has generated a tremendous amount of excitement in this space- due to the ability deploying a platform specifically designed for Network Function Virtualization. This presentation will cover deployment considerations for NFV and will close off with a demo of a NFV enabled deployment with OpenStack.  We will cover all aspects of a truly virtualized network environment from layers 2-7 and why this has become increasing important to Telco SP customers seeking to transition from monolithic platforms to open, virtualized and adaptive network services.

See how Telstra together with HPE and its partner ecosystem vendors Nuage and F5 solved one of Telstra's key pain points around exponential traffic growth. The issues for Telstra were specifically around control and dynamic access of content, alleviating bandwidth constraints and addressing the challenges of incorporating emerging technologies such as 5G and IOT. Telstra decided on leveraging NFV, SDN and cloud technologies to tackle these issues. Attend this session to learn how Telstra and HPE approached the problem and solved it using all the components as laid out in the ETSI NFV architecture. The session will provide details of the PoC and demonstrate the activation and orchestration of various VNFs by a tenant customer through a self-service portal.
