I was in the Dallas Fort Worth airport yesterday on my way back from some business meetings.  Right after passing through the security checkpoint I ran into a plane load of military personnel returning from service in Iraq.

There was an impromptu celebration lead by the TSA personnel and pretty much everybody stopped to applaud the troops as they exited the airplane.

I was struck by a couple of things while witnessing this:

  • The people coming off the plane in uniform looked really, really young.
  • The wide variety of facial expressions worn by the soldiers as they came through the crowd.  They ranged from big grins accompanied by fist pumping to very somber looks.  Most of them seemed surprised by the reception.

The whole affair lasted somewhere between 5-10 minutes and I was surprised by how moving it was for me.
