config restore from F5 3600 LTM to Viprion VCMP guest

Hello,

I am trying to migrate LTM from 3600 platform to Viprion 2400. I have configured vcmp guest on Viprion, but when I try to restore the UCS file from the 3600 device to vcmp guest, it is giving some errors ..

i have specified no license and no hardware check options, it is still giving the error message. I am thinking the problem might be with bigip_base.conf file , on 3600 platform we are using five 1gig connections.. but on Viprion.. we are just using two 10gig connection.

Can you tell me if there is any way to skip bigip_base.conf file while restoring.. i can configure selp ip addresses manually in vcmp guest or is there any best practice that I can follow.

Thank you!

We got around this by manually editing the bigip_base.conf after the UCS imported.

We removed the broken interfaces/VLANs then ran "tmsh load sys config" until it worked

Hi Andrew, Thank you so much, we did the same thing and it worked.

Hi Vasu, 11.4.1 and later allows disparate hardware platforms in a device group. This allows migration of configuration. Some more detail here:

Hope this is helpful, Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the post. Actually, we have two pairs of LTMs running in version 10.2.4(one pair) and second pair (11.1.0).

I would like to import the these LTM configurations to two pairs or vcmp guests ... on vcmp guests we are running version 11.4.1. wht did was i took UCS file from the from the 10.2.4 devices extracted using tar.. i removed the bigip_base.conf file from the extracted folder and replaced with bigip_base.conf file from the vcmp guest and again bundled that as a ucs file .. when i tried to load this modified UCS file... i am getting below errors..

Configuration loading error: base-config-load-failed For additional details, please see messages in /var/log/ltm

in the lTM log file .. i see the below error:

012e0008:3: The requested command (cm cert) is invalid Reading configuration from /config/bigpipe/low_profile_base.conf. Reading configuration from /config/bigpipe/config_base.conf. Reading configuration from /config/bigpipe/bigip_sys.conf. Reading configuration from /config/bigpipe/bigip_base.conf.

I have seen in one of the F5 document that, we can use 10.2.4 ucs file and import it to version 11.X system.

Please let me know if there is any better way of migrating config from the physical boxes to vcmp guests .

thanks in advance!

Hi Vasu, The UCS is best used on the device it was created. Moving files in and out of the UCS can cause problems (as you are seeing). Most likely you are only after objects in the bigip.conf.

Can you extract that file and move it to /config on the VCMP guest. Load it with:

tmsh load sys config

Here are a few issues you may have:

1) Route Domain IP addresses (route domain not on VCMP guest).
2) VLAN enabled on a config object (VLAN doesn't exist on the VCMP guest).
3) Partition enabled on a config object (Partition doesn't exist on VCMP guest).
3) Missing SSL keys (these are easy to get from the UCS).
4) Missing External Monitor (these are easy to get from the UCS).

Try that and let's see how the migration goes.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the reply. There is some good news. I was able to migrate to the config to vCAMP guest using UCS file.. only thing is I have to modify the bigip_base.conf file.

it took multiple attempts, basically, I removed physical interfaces from the old UCS file.

It worked

thank you!

Hi Vasu,

When you restored your ucs file on to the vcmp guest, did you bring down the tmm interface on 3600 platform device? I am going through the similar scenario of hardware refresh from a platform device to vcmp guest. And i was wondering how would we deal with a situation where same vips are configured on muliple devices other than HA pair. Would that not cause layer 2 conflicts? Any advises/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks Kiran
