Create a layer 7 profile for a proprietary protocol

Hello,

We have an application owner that wants to create a pool on the F5 LTM with a load balancing method of Fastest. This load balancing method was chosen after analyzing their connection and traffic pattern. They have ruled out all the other load balancing method mainly because they don't quite think it fits their needs.

The fastest load balancing method requires the creation of a layer 7 profile. This is an application that runs a proprietary protocol and hence none of the existing layer 7 profile fits. We looked at the simplest profile, RADIUS and am still not comfortable using it because we don't know exactly what happens under the hood.

Is there a way to create and use a layer 7 profile that doesn't alter anything in the traffic but merely for the purpose of associating it with the fastest load balancing method so the F5 ltm has a way to track layer 7 requests and response.

Thanks, Helen

  • Helen Did you ever figure this out, i am looking at doing a similar thing for similar reasons to yourself. Regards

  • Well... I would not use one wrong protocol profile only to enable a specific load balance method. The fastest profile simply detects which node has less requests waiting for response, depending on the protocol the least connections will behave the same way.
