Direct cable connection

This may be a silly question, but I have never done it before. If you plug a cable in between 2 LTMS , do you need a crossover or a straight cable? I usually use fiber for sync, but these are old appliances i'm trying to get off of. Our network team wants to get off of old vlans. They want to retire the one i'm using for sync. My idea is sync doesn't need to be routed anyway, so I could keep the same IP addressing and just plug a cable between the 2 interfaces instead of into the switch.
