Configuration Backup.

Running version 11.3 HF1.

Just preparing the steps require for Disaster Receovery (such as F5 replacement from RMA:)

1) Save the SCF (after any changes) using command "save sys config file bigip4.scf"

Saving running configuration...

/var/local/scf/bigip4.scf

/var/local/scf/bigip4.scf.tar

2) SCP (or FTP) both files to a server

3) To restore, transfer the 2 files above to directoy /var/local/scf onto a new F5 device

and run the command below:

load /sys config file bigip4.scf tar-file bigip4.scf.tar

Is licensing and SSL certificates included in the SCF? If not, can someone advice the steps?

Any oher parts I have missed?

There's no mention about using .UCS in 11.3 doc so assuming that .SCF is the recommended choice?

Currently only running LTM but may add ASM in future.

Thank you.

  • Seems there are some changes afoot. Previously an an SCF would just be a single file. I've just tested this and indeed it now creates a tar containing SSL certificates and iFiles too. No license information though and compared to a UCS there is a considerable amount missing so I would still suggest you use a UCS archive instead if you want to do a full restore. The SCF is enough to duplicate the LTM configuration and required SSL and iFiles but not the entire box configuration (user home directories, external DGs etc.).
  • Thank you for the reply. Is there a document showing all the files and their location that one need to backup to do a full restore?

The reason is that I have an option to use NCM which can do automatic backup.

It however only back up running and start up configs. Assuming that i have the running and startup config,

just want to know what other files i need to do a full restore or am i better off to use scripting to back up UCS?

  • Hi Tino,

A UCS is everything together (certificates, external class files(if they are in the right location), licenses, etc.). It is pretty much the only way to fully restore the device without having to piece it back together one piece at a time.

I would suggest reading this before you decide which way you want to go:
