Problem with sol11033 - Managing BIG-IP version 10.2.x hotfixes on systems using partitions

I'm struggling with an error and some inconsistencies in: http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/11000/000/sol11033.html10to10

I have HA 1500s running 10.2.4. I want to write a plan to upgrade from 10.2.4-595 (Hotfix 3) to 10.2.4-771.0 (Hotfix 6)

Specifically on the section Installing a 10.1.x or 10.2.x hotfix on a partitioned system when another partition is running version 10.x

  1. There is an inconsistency in Step 2 between the details for HD1.2 in the current and default image output and what is displayed in the available boot images below. Is HD1.2 running 10.1.0 or 10.0.1?

switchboot -l

For example, the following switchboot -l command output indicates that a version 10.1.0 installation resides on the HD1.1 partition, and a version 10.0.1 installation resides on the HD1.2 partition:

Current boot image:

HD1.2 - title BIG-IP 10.1.0 Build 3341.0

Default boot image:

HD1.2 - title BIG-IP 10.1.0 Build 3341.0

Available boot image(s):

HD1.1 - title BIG-IP 10.1.0 Build 3341.0

HD1.2 - title BIG-IP 10.0.1 Build 354.0

  1. Step 3 then performs a switchboot to HD1.2, then Step 9 installs the hotfix to the same partition, and then Step 11 and 12 switchboot to the same partition and boot into it. This does not follow the directive in Step 2 that states:

Note: When installing a version 10.x hotfix on a partitioned system, you must run the hotfix installation from a partition other than the target partition.

  1. The installation example in Step 10 also uses different versions to those used in the earlier steps:

SOFTWARE - Status:

+-> SOFTWARE STATUS

| Key Slot Product Version Build Active Status

| HD1.1 0 BIG-IP 10.0.0 5401.0 yes complete

| HD1.2 0 BIG-IP 10.1.0 3372.0 no installing 27.620 pct

This is causing me difficulties, because there is no logical progression to follow through the steps, unless I’m mistaken and am reading it wrong?

My partition list looks like this:

Current boot image:

HD1.4 - title BIG-IP 10.2.4 Build 595.0

Default boot image:

HD1.4 - title BIG-IP 10.2.4 Build 595.0

Available boot image(s):

HD1.1 - title BIG-IP 10.1.0 Build 3341.0

HD1.2 - title BIG-IP 10.1.0 Build 3402.0

HD1.3 - title BIG-IP 10.2.4 Build 577.0

HD1.4 - title BIG-IP 10.2.4 Build 595.0

Am I right in thinking I can:

switchboot to HD1.1 in Step 3

Install the Hotfix to HD1.2 in Step 9

switchboot to HD1.2 in Step 11

full_box_reboot to HD1.2 in Step 12

Thanks for looking, appreciate any suggestions.

  • Ignoring the SOL, you need to upgrade a partition/volume that isn't 'live' and then simply boot into it afterwards, then repeat as necessary.
  • Thanks Steve, that makes sense. That would simplify my plan to:

    Install the Hotfix to HD1.2

    switchboot to HD1.2

    full_box_reboot
