SMTP Virtual Server Redirect?

I have 2 Virutal Servers (a & b) for our Mail Gateways w/ a Service Port of 25. If a client attempts to send mail using Virtual Server a, is it possible to redirect them to Virtual Server b? If so, how would such an iRule be constructed? Please advise.

Thank you

  • Hi,

I don't think there is any function within SMTP that would allow you to send a response back to the client telling them to make the same request to another host/IP. I didn't see anything in the RFC's that looked relevant (Click here). (edit: the SMTP wikipedia page has a nice index of related RFCs as well: Click here)

Could you point clients to the same VIP and use a rule to determine which pool of SMTP servers to send the request to? I suppose you could do this even with two VIPs, actually.

What is the scenario you're dealing with?
