Naming Restriction

In the LTM doc, I see a common naming restrictions for the following:

1. pool names

2. node names

3. SNAT names

4. rate class names

The naming restriction is defined as case-sensitive, containing only letters, numbers and (_)underscore. Reserved keywords are not allowed.

Does the same restriction apply for other names?

(i.e. Virtual Server name, iRule names)

  • I'll have to verify this next time I'm in the office, but it's my understanding that the naming restrictions are common across all user-defined named objects.

  • Joe, I sure hope that is the situation. I did the following test and found a bit of a discontinuity in the naming.

Using your jsp admin GUI, I attempted to create a virtual server name containing an ampersand (&). The response was as follows:

01070088:3: The requested object name (test&test) is invalid.

Next I tried a virtual server name containing a greater than (>) character. The response was as follows:

(!) Bad Characters. Only the following special characters are allowed: period, asterisk, foward slash, dash, colon, underscore, question mark, equals, at sign, comma, ampersand and space.*/-:_?=@,

This error message indicates an ampersand is OK, however, the previous test shows it fails.

Thanks for any help you can provide to clear this up.
