RE: Connect in to SQL Database

We are migrating from 4.x to 9.4.x and we have had to cases were servers behind the 9.4.x F5 was unable to connect to SQL Server on the other side of the F5 Server. Has anybody run into similar problems

  • Hello,

Can you provide more detail on you configuration and the issue(s)?

Have you configured the BIG-IP to pass traffic from servers behind it to the SQL server using a SNAT or virtual server? Did you previously enable IP forwarding to do this in 4.x?

Are the connections always failing immediately? Do they fail some times but work other times? Do they get timed out after a specific number of seconds?

Do you see any errors on the client or the SQL server?

  • We are not using snat for this paticular connection.

We have IP Forwarding turned on all ports.

When cutover to 9.x the webserver behind the F5 LTM reported that it lost connection to database we were addressing other issues and did not get a chance to address the issue. The application analyst for the change did not know the application well and we did not find out till afterwards it was database connectivity problem. When we failed back to 4.5.x the webserver was again able to talk to the database. The database connects on non stadard port (2125)and is not behind the F5. The F5 acts as a router.

If LTM is expected to act as a router, you may need to configure a forwarding virtual server to carry the traffic that was previously handled by ipforwarding.
