Profile change lag time?

Hello All,

I'm currently testing various performance capabilities with the F5 and our SAP Portal deployment. Unfortunately for me, this week our "F5 guy" is on vacation, so besides not being able to test the SAP Portal policy functionality, it's also difficult to run test cycles--when any [compression] changes I make don't seem to affect the behavior.

The past week I have been running test cycles of varying compression tweaks in the profile we have attached to the http:443 port. Specifically changing the content list types, etc.

What I frustratingly started to discover was there didn't seem to be a one-to-one correlation of changes through the F5 profile and results I was seeing through the browser. In short, it wasn't compressing what I thought it should have been, etc. In fact it wasn't compressing *anything* yesterday, when I had the threshold so low it should have been compressing ALL "compressable" traffic.

Oddly, this morning when I started testing again, it appears the compression is working for *some* things. Like it's healed itself. I haven't made any changes since last night, yet the results are different.

I've spent a fair amount of time trying to debug this issue and am at the point of thinking a) there's either a lag in seeing changes to the F5 profile or b) there's a bug in F5 microcode that is somehow affecting my results.

My question for the forum is: is there something I need to do beyond clicking [Update] after making the profile changes, or will the new settings automatically pick up? I looked in the logs last night and the system seems to send a kill -HUP to the process--my guess is it's forcing a restart.

Using the latest version:

BIG-IP 9.4.4 Build 73.1 Hotfix HF1

And I'm attaching a PDF of the compression config.

Thank you in advance.

  • Is this an issue with your modifications using iControl? Or is it using the product GUI? I'm not aware of any lag time issues outside of the fact that persisted connections will likely not get the changes in the profile - I could be wrong on that one though as I don't know specifically with regards to compressions.

This is really a question better suited for Product Support as it falls outside the realm of developer API types of questions so you might get faster results there.

If anyone out there knows the answer, please chime in. You might try posting this to the Adv Design and Config forum to see if any other eyes can help you out.

  • Hi Joe, thank you for the response. I was thinking it might be the persistent connections but am not familiar with the inner workings of F5. The "regular guy" will be back from vacation next week so we should be able to sort this out in short order. If not we'll create a ticket with F5.

    Thank you again,
