Setting member preference without updating configuration

Hi all,

I've got a LC HA pair in Active / Active mode. Sometimes I need to change priority of some pool members. I've tried changing ratio / dynamic ratio and priority through bigpipe shell, but all of them modifies the configuration, so HA pair appears to be out sync.

Performing these changes with iControl, does it "update" the configuration?

Kind regards,

Javier.

  • Hi Javier,

I don't think there is a way to modify the running configuration without the sync status being changed through the GUI, the CLI or iControl. Is there a reason you can't either sync the config to the peer or handle it being out of sync?

  • Hi Hoolio,

I was looking for a way to implement a monitor that could change on the fly the priority / ratio for a node / member. Something similar to dynamic monitors.

It should be nice I could create my own SNMP monitors and being able to monitor OIDs I'd like to.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Javier,

Is there something you want to do that you cannot do with the default dynamic ratio algorithm? Or is the issue that the dynamic ratio algorithm generates a state where the units show the configuration is out of sync?

  • Hi Hoolio,

I'm not concerned about default dynamic ratio algorithm. I'd like to assess the possibility to implement something similar to SNMP monitors (changing dynamic ratios) but with an external script or through iControl.

    Thx for your help Aaron.
  • You might get more relevant views in the iControl forum (Click here). But yes, you can poll the pool members directly using SNMP or any other protocol and then modify the LTM pool configuration to specify a new weight for the pool members.

  • Hi Aaron,

the point of the post was.. to modify any dynamic value through cli or iControl but not modifying the configuration.

    best regards,

    Javier Checa.
  • Sorry for the misunderstanding, Javier. If you want to modify how LTM processes traffic to the pool, you'd need either use a dynamic load balancing algorithm or modify the configuration. Dynamic load balancing can be done using a plugin or SNMP monitoring of the pool members. Else if neither of these options work for your scenario, you could modify the configuration manually using the GUI or programmatically via iControl.

If I'm still missing your question, can you elaborate on what you're trying to accomplish, what you've tried and what's not working?

    Thanks,
