F5 GTM vs Cisco GSS

I am trying to compare the loadbalancing intellegence between cisco GSS and F5 GTM. If anyone had used either product, can you please let us know your thought....

  • If you're strictly looking at lb algorithm intelligence, the basics are fairly similar in function, though performance on the GSS was nowhere near the GTM (from personal experience, GSS 4490 versus GTM 1500, not any official Cisco/F5 numbers). What separates GTM (on this point alone) is the ability to combine in any fashion all the basic methods into one, plus a few more advanced ones, weighted by your preferences. Now, beyond the lb algorithms, the GTM communicates with the Big-IP in a way the GSS cannot, so it can gather more advanced availability and performance data with which to make a decision. Also, the GTM is better suited to provide name services beyond it's wideIP's, whereas the GSS was really only intended to be delegated to for those specific services that it will load balance. Maybe the GSS has come further since I last used it, but these are my $.02 worth of observations from my comparison a few years back.
