Direct all traffic except specific service (FTP) to a server

Have a question from our windows support group where they want to break out a service (FTP) from a server and have it hosted on another server.

All users reference the same host name for FTP as well as other services (Shares, etc.).

Tried a few things on the F5 but haven't come up with a solution yet I'm thinking it should be able to pass all traffic to the server but when it sees the request for the specific service (FTP) that it will direct it to another server.

Possible? Appreciate any help with this. Thanks.

  • Are your users currently pointing to a wildcard virtual server? Or just passing through the F5 to get to the IP that the hostname references?

If they are going to a wildcard vip, you can just create a new vip on that same IP address with the FTP port specified, and point that vip to a different pool with the other server.

  • currently not going through the F5 at all. All users go directly to the server. So from what you indicate i set up a wildcard virtual server on the F5 and change the dns for that server to point to the F5 VIP. Then I can create a new VIP with FTP and have it go to a different pool (which is their new FTP server).

Seems straightforward.. now to go do it. thanks.
