BIP-IP : iControl update & sync HA pair

BIG-IP 11.4.1 Build 608.0 Final

I am using iControl to update a Data Group File on a active-standby pair of BIG-IP devices.

What is best-practice to update & sync an HA pair ?

Should I identify the active device , apply update to it , and then sync the standby device ? If so , how to identify the active device ?

Or can I apply to the update to either device ( irrelevant of whether it's currently active or standby ) and then sync the other device ?

And what type of sync should I perform ? BASIC or ALL ?

If answer is different for GTM/LTM , please describe differences.

Thanks.

EDIT : Turns out our prod F5s are configured with floating IPs which always talk to active member of active/standby pair. So it seems I need to perform a synchronize-to-group operation from the floating ip , correct ?

also theres several documents on F5 support site about HA sync which you can review to make yourself familiar with the process.

Yes I'm reading through various documents. However, I am not finding answers to all of my questions. Specifically, how to identify which device in the pair is currently active ? And what type of config sync to perform ?

    Check https://devcentral.f5.com/questions/how-to-find-out-if-f5-server-is-an-active-or-stand-alone

System.Failover.get_failover_state() will show the failover status.

    John,

The type of config syncs you can do are automatic and manual. You can also choose between sync only and sync failover groups.

    Hope this helps!
