Enterprise Manager VS Big IQ

I used to be under the assumption that BigIQ was replacing Enterprise Manager, but I am not sure that is the case. What is the the real differences between the products because they seem to have overlapping feature sets and I am not sure why one customer would pick one appliance over the other. I see that there are different options (or maybe modules) for BigIQ, but I have no idea what its purpose is in relation the EM.

  • just my personal feeling, EM is going away, BIGIQ is the future, but currently it is still a limited product.
  • Okay, so they are trying to port the features of EM into BigIQ it is just going to take some time, essentially. That was my original thought. When i read this "*If you're primarily interested in the device and license management features of Enterprise Manager, BIG-IQ Device might have what you’re looking for.". I started to wonder if they were going to continue keeping the products separate. Source: https://f5.com/products/modules/enterprise-manager

    Hi

Yes, EM will be superseded by BigIQ. There are separate licensed modules (capability/functionality) in BigIQ.

So the BigIQ DEVICE is the feature set/module you need to have some device management.

You cannot upgrade from EM to BigIQ. EM was sold on hardware, and then later as a virtual machine. BigIQ is primarily virtual appliances.

BiGIQ supports REST and iControl, where EM supports iControl only. REST will be the 'go forwartd' API engine also, and is available in v11.4 and v11.5

If I was you ask your SE/Sales guys for an eval copy and have a look. It there are things in EM that you "have to have" that are not in BigIQ yet, then get the F5 sales guys to put in requests for those features.

BigIq is in the process of being improved and the release cycles are decoupled from the BigIp release cycles -- ie more frequent updates.

  • Can someone point me to a document/wiki for a feature-set comparison between the two products - BigIQ and Enterprise Manager? As BigIQ develops, it would be great to see which product covers a certain feature. There's some hesitation to upgrade to BigIQ because of perceived lack of feature parity with Enterprise Manager.

  • For some reason Enterprise Manager (Virtual Edition 3.1.1) doesn't seem able to manage F5 BIG IP version 12.0.0

    What am I missing here?

It mostly works for me. Sometimes the managed devices need a reboot. I am running 12.0.0 HF1

  • You are not alone in your confusion. This has been one of F5s weaker product releases, and follow up development. BigIQ is still not a replacement for EM, and EM is too much of a vulnerability to be running in any serious Production environments. This has created a huge product gap. With that said, F5 is a ADC company, not an ADC Management Tool company,.. It is not their core competency. I would advise you to seek companies that sole purpose id ADC Management tools. Anyone recall F5 See-It? This is looking like a pattern. ;)

I have POC'd BigIQ twice in the last 3 years, and it is still coming up short, IMO.
