Setting a High Ratio on one of two nodes.

We'd like to use a high ratio as a sort of a hack for HA between our Varnish nodes.

Something like 99:1, so that most of the HTTP traffic will go through one node (to improve cache hits) but if that primary node fails, all of the traffic can go through the secondary.

Would there be any adverse effects to doing this?

  • Instead of ratio, you could turn on priority group activation. Set it with 'less than 1' available member, and change your preferred member to a priority of something higher than the member you wish to be used only in the event of a failure of the primary member.

Then only if your primary member goes down will the secondary member be used. When the primary comes back online, traffic will begin being sent to it immediately (depending on your monitor of course).
