config file

Hello, I'm backing up via solarwinds the running coinfig file for restore purposes. WHat is the differences between the .ucs archive file and the running\startup config file and which would be used for restore purposes and how? Thanks.

  • I don't think Solar Winds will produce a useful backup of an F5. Solar Winds can snatch simple text file backups of routers, switches, etc. but the F5 backups are more complicated. The UCS archive is a tape archive (tar) of all configuration files necessary to resurrect an F5. Solar Winds 'running config' might contain sufficient configuration information to represent all objects defined on an F5 but I have doubts the file would be readily consumed by an F5 to perform a restore.

  • You'd be much better off using a script to generate the UCS on a regular basis and copy it 'off box'. A quick search of DC for 'backup script' will provide plenty of examples.
