DNS Health Monitor for a Node

Hi All,

Can i assign a custom DNS health monitor to a node ? I have 6 nodes in a pool. I created the health monitor in the common partition. But when i went into the node properties to assign the custom health monitor, its not showing up in the node specific list of health monitor. Rather it shows up in the pool health monitor section. Is there any way i can assign a DNS health monitor to a node ?

Thanks

  • I don't think it's possible. This is taken from F5's configuration guide about nodes:

A primary feature of nodes is their association with health monitors. Like pool members, nodes can be associated with health monitors as a way to determine server status. However, a health monitor for a pool member reports the status of a service running on the device, whereas a health monitor associated with a node reports status of the device itself.

Using the LTM system, you can monitor the health of performance of your nodes by associating health or performance monitors with those nodes. This is similar to associating a monitor with a load balancing pool, except that in the case of nodes, you are monitoring the IP address, whereas with pools, you are monitoring the services that are active on the pool members.

The LTM system contains many different pre-configured monitors that you can associate with nodes, depending on the type of traffic you want to monitor. You can also create your own custom monitors and associate them with nodes. The only pre-configured monitors that are not available for associating with nodes are monitors that are specifically designed to monitor pools or pool members rather than nodes.

Hi Cory, Thanks for the reply, i came across that as well. But i think the statement You can also create your own custom monitors and associate them with nodes. The only pre-configured monitors that are not available for associating with nodes are monitors that are specifically designed to monitor pools or pool members rather than nodes. Does that not telling us that custom monitors can be associated with the nodes ?

I think some types of custom monitors can, depending on the parent monitor. I just tried creating a custom DNS monitor (with parent monitor dns) and it did not allow me to assign to a node (v11.4.1 HF3). I believe this is expected behavior. Some monitor types aren't designed to be applied at the node level.
