F5 SSL VPN Bandwidth Usage

Currently we are using Microsoft UAG for SSL VPN Solution web-based (We are not using network tunneling). We have around 1000 concurrent connections on average.

We have procured F5 4000S box as replacement and in the process of implementing the SSL VPN. We are going to opt for network tunnel option. The remote users would be connecting through Broadband connection. Would like to if F5 SSL VPN network tunneling would require higher bandwidth than web based UAG solution. Based on the requirement and understanding we need to do optimize the Hub Internet Bandwidth.

  • Assuming the users will be accessing the same resources as they do today and nothing else, you can expect slightly higher bandwidth utilization due to the encapsulation overhead, but it should be insignificant, especially if you use DTLS. If your users will start using other resources internally, then your bandwidth utilization will increase accordingly.
