Can't access F5 VE GUI admin console

I downloaded trial version of F5 Virtual Edition BIG-IP VE 11.3.0.39.0 and installed on VSXi VM. I followed the steps given on this link : http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/ve-vmware-esx-esxi-11-3-0/2.htmlconceptid

I changed the Management IP address on the VM to be in the same subnet as my local machine. My local machine is: 10.157.102.103 and f5 VM's IP address is: 10.157.102.201. But, I am unable to access f5 VE GUI from my machine over https (https://10.157.102.201).

When I try to ping this IP Address, I get this - Reply from 10.157.102.103: Destination host unreachable. I know that the VM is running. So, it must be something with the network but I don't know how to troubleshoot the connectivity between my local machine and f5 VM ? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Update: Also, the manual chapter mentioned at above link says: *After you complete these tasks, you can log in to the BIG-IP VE system and run the Setup utility. Using the Setup utility, you can perform basic network configuration tasks, such as assigning VLANs to interfaces.*.. I couldn't find a way to run the setup utility. I can't get to the GUI admin console therefore, I am not sure if it needs to run from there. Is there a way to run the setup utility from F5 Command prompt (black console) ? Thanks !
  • If you have console access you should be able to log in and see if you can ping the default gateway or ping your workstation. If you can't that explains the problem.

SOL Article 13369 has info about the initial configuration steps via console. From the console type "config". That will launch the initial configuration wizard that walks you through configuring the management interface. Make sure you supply the default gateway as the default route.

Thanks Steve, I had default gateway setup as: 10.157.102.251. I tried pinging it but I am getting this error message: From 10.157.102.201 icmp_seq=91 Destination Host Unreachable. What does this mean ? What could be the problem here ?

What is your default gateway on your workstation? Whatever you have there for the default gateway is what you want to have on the F5 as well. I would assume you can ping the default gateway from your workstation. If you cannot ping the default gateway from the F5 then there is something wrong in the config of the network interface; likely on the hypervisor (VMware) side. There really isn't much to configuration of the mgmt interface on the F5.

I have the same default gateway on my machine i.e. 10.157.102.251. and yes, I can ping it from my machine. I will check config on network interface and will post my findings here. Thanks for your help !

Another check you can do is to confirm the mapping of the BIG-IP management interface to the correct network adapter in the Virtual Machine Properties.

    On the BIG-IP: [root@localhost:Active:Standalone] config ifconfig eth0 eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0C:29:XX:XX:XX

From the vSphere Client click on: the deployed guest > Edit virtual machine settings > Network Adapter 1. Confirm that the MAC Address matches the output you recieved with ifconfig and that the device status is 'Connected' and 'Connect at power on'.

This is a good catch. Sorry I didn't remember this. Every VE I've deployed has always come up with eth0 matched to the first virtual NIC, but if that didn't happen for some reason this could easily explain the problem.
  • Having exact the same problem, did everything talked about in this blog still no luck, anyone found the solution yet?

  • hey check mac address of nat adapter in vm workstation(vm-->settings-->select interface-->advanced(00:0C:29:64:28:98)) and mac address of eth0 in f5((use ip a command to get mac)00:0C:29:64:28:98). if these are different you can't access the mngmt interface of f5.

  • Hi,

I am able to ping gateway from the F5 VM but the F5 VM's mgmt iIP address is not reachable from the pc

I tried below command but getting error "tmm0: hostname lookup fail" Please advice

    ifconfig eth0 eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0C:29:1C:38:43
