Migration plan HA pair BigIp LTM 3400 and BigIp 1600

Hi,

I've an question about an migration from an 3400 LTM HA pair (active/standby) to 1600 HA pair (active/standby). From the article (https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/8000/600/sol8665.html?sr=43411635) I understand that's not possible to migratie if the boxes are running version 11.0.x or higher. Both 3400 and 1600 are running 10.2.X

The scenario I've in mind is the following:

1) Make the 3400 standby unit offline (make backup of configuration first)

2) Remove the 3400 standby unit from the network

3) Pre configure 1 1600 with the same management ip as the standby 3400

4) restore the configuration from the standby 3400 onto the 1600

5) connect the 1600 onto the network

6) make it offline and see if all virtual servers etc are working

7) make the 1600 online and force the 3400 active unit to go to standby or offline

8) check the 1600 unit to see if all is working if so let it run for one week

9) after that start with the other 3400 and 1600 units and do the same as above

Is this possible ? Anyone experience with this kind of migrations ?

Thx for you're reaction.

Dirk

  • i assume you already got the 1600, because you are moving from an unsupported platform (3400) to one that won't be around for much longer either (1600).

as for your assumption that you can make a redundant pair with a 1600 and 3400 im not 100% sure. if you got a F5 partner or support contract with F5 i would certainly double check this

    4) restore the configuration from the standby 3400 onto the 1600

might fail due to some difference in interfaces and such. be sure to take your time for this. if you have the 1600 you could already start testing now. perhaps use SCF or such so you can make changes easily.
