Network failover load

hi all,

had a question in mind for the following scenario.

between 2 LTM 7250v, it is being set up as HA with mirroring (connection and persistence) enable on certain virtual servers. the heartbeat used is 2x 1G fiber.

will there be any issue with the 1G fiber heartbeat link for failover and mirror all together? assuming the traffic utilization is around 50%

Cheers, Henry

  • You didn't give much to go on for this discussion but this link has some good information on setting up HA. link text It sounds like your wondering if the ingress 2 gig port channels will have enough capacity to handle both mirror traffic as well as load balanced traffic. I would think it would be ok but a good test plan will confirm. We use a dedicated port and connection direct from one F5 to the peer F5 for our HA vlan/setup.

  • I would be hesitant using a link that avg. 50% busy for the HA heart beat. A link utilization of 50% means that you are running at 100% for half of the time. You can't transmit data at 500 Mbps on a 1Gbps link. When data is flowing over a link it is running at 100%. So if for a 5 minute interval you show 50% utilization, that means for a total of 2.5 minutes you were running at 100% and for a total of 2.5 minutes you were running at 0%.
  • thanks for the reply.

sorry that i did not provide more information.

for this setup, we are using 10G for uplink for normal data connectivity. in terms of HA, we will be using a dedicated vlan and physical link which is 1G fiber link.

So the scenario will be as such. currently the unit is at around 50% utilization. if there is a failure triggered, will there be any issue as the HA link used are only 2x 1G link. i am wondering should there be able fail over, will there be any traffic being drop
