Big IP LTM 4000s HA pair software upgrade from 11.6HF3 to 12.0

Hi All,

We have a HA pair of Big IP LTM 4000s load balancers running in our network and want to do software upgrade from current version 11.6 HF3 to 12.0. I searched but coudln't find any documentation that outlines steps for such an upgrade. If anyone on this group has done such an upgrade then please let me know if there was any F5 online documentation that they followed (link would be usefull) and any potential pitfalls etc.

Thanks.

  • There is no special process to go to 12.0 from 11.x. Its the same as going from 11.5hfx to 11.6hf3. https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/bigip-11x-software-upgrade-11-5-0/1.htmlunique_522060513

One thing I will ask, is there something specific in 12.0 that you are needing? If there is not I would wait to go to v12 until 12.1 comes out and just go to 11.6.0hf6 for hotfix patching. The new Tick-Tock release cycle states that X.1 versions will be considered the "stable" long term supported versions. X.0 are more of early access to new features, will probably contain more bugs than the X.1 versions, and only be supported for a year once the X.1 version is released.

  • Hi Brad, thanks for your response. IBM vulnerability tracking has found a lot of security issues with 11.6HF3 (based on F5 advisories) therefore we want to take it to latest version. I will check whether 11.6hf6 will resolve all vulnerabilities that are addressed by 12.0. If 11.6hf6 is able to address all then we will goto that version and then upgrade to 12.1 when it becomes available.
