Is there downside in using one VIP for multiple Applications running on different ports?

Hi,

We are trying to conserve Virtual IP since we only allocated a 62 hosts (bad decision-making). Although we can add a new VLAN to add more hosts.. we're trying a different approach in which we wanted app team to maximize use of a VIP.

Is there downside in using one VIP for multiple Applications running on different ports? i.e. bandwidth concerns, traffic congestion?

Thanks!

  • I don't think it's an issue. I've had hundreds of applications share one VIP when Internet facing addresses were limited. Just consider that any client facing web apps will require the user to enter the URL and the port. If they get the port wrong, they'll hit the wrong app which may result in support calls or tickets. If that is not a concern, I don't think there is any problem with it.
