Why use external monitor in with SMTP 587 servers

In deployment guide f5-smtp-dg.pdf F5 tells us to use an external monitor to measure the availability of the SMTP nodes, when using server-side encrypting.

I don't understand why, because the basic SMTP health monitor works perfectly in encrypted trafic.

I do not want to use the external script.

Can anyone explain?

  • actually hoping you could help me. i've only ever gotten SMTP SSL offloading to work (to Exchange based ESMTP servers) and SSL passthrough. Neither is ideal and I'd like to reencrypt. Could you share your config as i've tried external monitors, stock smtp port checks, the works!
  • Did you configure Exchange (2010?) to use the 587 port in stead of port 25 in your anonymous receive connector? Set-ReceiveConnector -Bindings 0.0.0.0:587 -Identity \
