Upgrade IOS on a physical F5

Hi,

I'd like to upgrade the IOS of a physical F5 [5050]. The IOS weight is aprox 2Gig and it is hosted in my Computer.

The F5 has got 3 interfaces connected now: Management port, 1.1 [internal] and 1.2 [External], all using copper. Nothing connected on the console port.

I am connected to the F5 through GUI remotly and try to upload the file using Software Managment>>Image List and then upload.

It is taking ages and I really don't know if it is really uploading the file -> Is it the correct way or Do I need to connect my computer to the F5 directly using a console cable to the console port instead of the Management port?

Thanks in advance.

  • Assuming you have a Windows PC with full version of Putty, try the pscp command line utility. Alternatively, you can install the WinSCP program which can do the same. If there's WAN between your PC and the remote BigIP, it's normal if the transfer takes an hour or more, then the transfer speed really depends on your ISP bandwidth allocation on both ends, and the latency.

Putty SCP (specify correct source path, and replace 192.168.255.131 with your BigIP mgmt IP):

    pscp Desktop\BigIP-img.iso root@192.168.255.131:/shared/images/
  • OK, I managed to transfer the file from a USB to the F5 directory /shared/images ,see image below:

Why the file is in green? and when I try to install it, see the message that pops-out.

    Any suggestion?

  • Hi, Thanks All for feedback, I managed to transfer the file using WinSCP from my desktop to the remote F5, It took a while as it was a 2Gig file, but successfully and no problem.

Once the file was in place there [/shared/images], I upgraded the IOS following the GUI procedure.
