Vcmp Guest HA config on 5250v

Hello I am new to VMCP can you help me please We have two internal F5's which are two physical boxes those boxes are 5250v's.We are using Vcmp feature. and using two guests on each physical box.. The each physical box is acted like a vcmp hosts and we wanted to run a HA between the guests of two seperate physical boxes.. For example we have LTM 1 which is vcmp host and it has vcmp guest 1 and guest 2 and similarly we have LTM2 which is vcmp host and it has vcmp guest 1 and 2 now we want to have an HA between the LTM1 vcmp guest1 and LTM2 vcmp guest 2 . As a part of configuration we have configured the vcmp host with the self ips internal vlan and ha vlan as well on both hosts. But for HA option between ltm1 guest1 and ltm2 guest 2 we want to use seperate vlan which is ha vlan we created instead of using the internal vlan for config sync. So when i try to use the ha vlan for config-sync the guests are disconnected and getting a message that one or more host is unreachable . And also one thing I want to mention is when we creates the interfaces and trunks on vcmp host we are not able to see the ha vlan interface but we can able to see the the internal Vlan interface along with other new interfaces which I feel Those were created by vcmp host to vcmp guest . And when also i tried to tag the available interfaces on the guest as well it is giving me that vlan is not found. So what can we do i order fo solve this issue and there is a physical connection of the ha vlan interface with the other 5250v.

  • If I understood you correctly, you have configured self IPs on the vcmp hosts? That's not needed. Also, you do not need to touch the interfaces on your vcmp guest systems, they are passed on by the host in the right way automatically.

The vcmp hosts should both be configured as standalone devices, not being part of any device group. Then, create all the VLANs you need for your vcmp guests on the hosts first, and assign the correct physical interfaces (tagged/untagged) of the host(s) to them. After that, assign the VLANs to the appropriate vcmp guest. This is also done on the hosts. The VLANs will be present on the guest automatically after that. Do not touch them on the guests. Then, create self IPs within the VLANs on the vcmp guests only. Do not configure any IP addresses on the host (besides management).

I hope this works out for you.

    Best regards

  • Loosely speaking, the purpose of the VCMP Host is to be a shelf where you can place guests. Here are a couple of thoughts to guide you.

If someone can help clarify further, please comment.

    • The host has no fail over capability.
    • The host has no part in the HA config of the guests.
    • The guests that you build are normal BigIPs they just get Layer 2 from the Host
    • The Host has no Layer 3 configuration related to the guest
    • The guest has no knowledge that a host exists.
    • Build the Layer 2 to the Host
    • Delegate Layer 2 VLANs from the Host to the guest (payload or payloads and a HA VLANs) when configuring the guest in the VCMP Host config.
    • Build the guest BigIP like you normally would using the VLANs it now has access to that is learned from the Host.
  • quick question: should I create the HA VLAN on the host as well? And should I create an HA VLAN for each vCMP guest I have? Please advise, thank you
