Internal network & external network.

I saw some F5 scenario . some where F5 configure external & internal network or somewhere only one network. that means external & internal network carry the two Self ip & one network carry the only one self ip for client as well as server side. can any one explain those scenario ? when we use external/internal network? when only one network ?

  • Assumes you will be routing through the BIG-IP, hence the Internal and External names comes in picture. BIG-IP may be configured in a one-arm mode, and then use SNAT. If you are using a routed mode configuration it would be more likely that you would want more than 2 VLANS, placing a VLAN and SelfIP on each network that will in-house servers, and a "transport VLAN" on the "External" side that will have the inbound routes for the VIPS, and the default route out.

    Terms used 'external' and 'internal' really mean the client-facing or server facing vlans in question.

    client-> VIP (external) -> SNAT -> Servers(internal)

  • All it depends on security concerns and capacity concerns.

    External Load balancers usually means they serve customer traffic. Internal load balancers serves internal traffic.

    Of course you could mix them together.

  • if i want to load balance internal server. so, i need to configure only internal network.

  • Its configuration setup.In that case also you need to define internal & external network even though VLAN will same.
