I would strongly recommend monitoring at the pool level only, since it is where the actual service resides. In other words, if the service is up this means also that the underlying node is up so I don't care checking node. This is true in 99% of scenarios. Moreover, if the member is up but the node is not answering a monitor then both the node and the member will be marked down.

Monitoring the pool would be the best practice as the node can be used in multiple pools. If you are monitoring only a specific service on a node it could take down other pools it is a member of.
