F5 load balancer behaviour

Hi All,

We have configured an F5 load balancer for an application, if we enable F5, the application can utilize the F5 services and when disabled the application has no more access to F5 which is normal,

But the question is if F5 is disabled is there any possibility i can ping it and get reply as well, as currently its pingable even if we disabled it, please advise if this is normal or we need to shut down the F5 completely.. Thanks.

  • Its normal behavior of Standard virtual server. You will able to ping/telnet to VIP IP even virtual server status shows down but connection will not reach backend pool member. Standard virtual server operates as follows: the three-way TCP handshake occurs on the client side of the connection before the BIG-IP LTM system initiates the TCP handshake on the server side of the connection. Thanks for your quick reply,

The real issue is, on our application server having the F5 setup, it shows in the task manager processes that some clients accessing the server but in real no one is accessing the server, so can you advise why the clients sessions are been creating and killed automatically on the app server rapidly. hence keeping the server's resources busy all the time. We disabled the F5 like i stated before for some time the sessions were not there but afterwards it again start prompting, another server doesnt have the F5 that is working normally... Thanks in advance..
