K15496: Migrating new BIG-IP platforms to an existing device group

I have gone through this article and comfortable with the approach as I need to migrate from separate existing 6900 boxes to vCMP's running on Viprion B2150. This approach gives me a cushion of config SYN happening till the time I bring down the older 6900 boxes.

Question I am not clear with how the GTM/BigIP-DNS box needs to be talking to all the 4 nodes, the current member name reference on GTM/BigIP-DNS is with the old boxes name /Common/LTM-XYZ001-002.

Can anyone guide me how would GTM/BigIP-DNS and all the new four LTM's in the same device group talk to each other ?

Anyone who has already gone through this would know exactly how the comms between BigIP-DNS and the LTM's would work.

  • F5 Support answered back which they are pretty quick on F5 Support Rocks!!!. Don't think there are any other options which Guru's here can suggest.

    1. when I add new vCMP guest into LTM cluster, what additional steps I need to perform in GTM?
    2. Either you upgrade the GTM to version 13.1.0.3, which will allow you to have a "Redundant Big-IP system" with 4 units in it or you create two traffic groups on the LTMs and make one member of each cluster as active state and then create a second redundant system on the Big-IP DNS to add the new LTM pair to it.

    3. What precaution I need to have before removing "LTM-XYZ1/2" IP address from GTM Server object ? Will I lose all the virtual server objects earlier discovered by GTM from mentioned LTM cluster by removing them from configuration?

    4. Assuming you want to keep the GTM on version 12, when you remove the "XYZ" LTMs, all virtual servers associated with it will be removed.

    5. Is there any way to modify existing server object "LTM-XYZ1/2" to "LTM-PQR1/2" without impacting existing Wide-IP configuration?

    6. Assuming you want to keep the GTM on version 12, if you create two traffic groups on the LTMs, you will need to manually add all elements from the new clusters on the current pools before removing the old pair, othewise all pools will be empty when you remove the older pair from it.
