root password reset with admin credentials

I have and admin username and password, but don't have root password. I would like to reset the root password without downtime. When I login to F5 with admin password, under system>Platform>User Administration, I can see root password fields.

 

I would like to know if I can change the root password here without any impact. Can someone strongly suggests me if I am right ?

  • There are three ways to go about this:

     

    1. Login to the GUI as admin then reset root password as you described. Your admin session will restart but this restart shouldn’t affect production traffic

       

    2. Login to GUI as admin. Add/change shell access for admin account to enable. Login to the CLI as admin. If you’re at the tmsh prompt, type run util bash or bash. Then type passwd root at the command prompt.

       

    3. Login to GUI as admin. Add/change shell access for admin account to enable. Login to the CLI as admin. If you're at tmsh prompt, type modify auth password root

      Thank you.

       

      admin session will restart - means the browser or any webservices inside the F5 ? I was in an impression that we need to connect a console and reboot the f5 then reset the root pwd - in fact this is what f5 tac also told. could you re-confirm on this pls, and can ensure that no production impact as well. ?

      One correction: the admin GUI will log you out when you change the admin password. Changing the root password will not log you out. F5 production traffic will not be affected (e.g. LTM, GTM, AFM, etc) in either case.

       

      As for resetting the root password, was the F5 representative aware you had access to the admin credentials? I’ve changed the root password using admin access to the GUI (System->Platform) on multiple occasions.
