slow file upload thru VIP after upgrading from 11.6 yo 12.1.2+HF2

Gentlemen, Thank you for your feedback. We running 2.6Gbps on 11.6.1, on a vip with a single node. Default TCP profile for the vip - nothing fancy.

ON Version 11.6, we're sending single file, 300MB file directly to the node, from a client, and we are able to get it done within 20sec.

We upgrade to 12.1.2 HF2, and, transfer the same file, and it take 100x longer. F5 said to change disable PROXY OPTION, and that didn't help.

F5 said to reduce the Minimum RTO to 10ms (from a default of 1000ms), but that didn't work, but there are some improvement - about 20% improvement.

Packet trace on the F5, on the LAN switch, and on the node shows 0 errors on 11.6.

Packet trace on the F5 w/version 12.1.2 show about 1.2% packet lost, and a ton of Fast RETRAN, and packet drop.

THe node is a VM, siting on ESXi host, running REHL6. netstat -s show now errors/drop/reset on the Node.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • For a rough situation like this where the team is having issue progressing forward with an issue I would copy the virtual server and begin to peel unnecessary features from this newly created test virtual server until I could identify the problem.

If even a bare bones profile fails to resolve the issue, play around with some of the different tcp profiles and virtual server types until resolution is found. Feel free to post the list ltm virtual vs_name all-properties and it's associated profiles for suggestions. I'd also look for interface statistics of interest under the host and tmsh panes of glass that could perhaps give insight on the retransmissions.

Good luck and let us know.

  • I appreciate your feedback.

We did try several of the TCP profile, both on the client side and server side (LAN, Mobile optimization etc etc), and no improvement was observed.

The bad news is that the F5 is a production box with over 500 working VIPs, but none of these VIP are performing large file upload/download.

I wish I could peel-back feature, but some features will impact other working VIPs.

I'm going to test FastL4 profile, to see if there are any improvements.

PS - i have to get 'clearance' to post the configs - or else I will have to update my resume :)

  • Hi,

Can you confirm that in your TCP profile you disable Nagle's Algorithm

I already had this kind of behaviour!!!
