Licensed default limit of "SSL, 500 TPS Per Core"

I find the following in "http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/7000/700/sol7751.html" that:

SSL CMP @ 500 TPS per core is now enabled in the base license for the BIG-IP 1600, 3600, 3900, 6900, 8900, and VIPRION platforms.

For a Viprion 2100 blade, which is "Single Intel quad core Xeon processor (total 8 hyperthreaded logical processor cores)" according to "https://www.f5.com/pdf/products/viprion-overview-ds.pdf", exactly how much licensed capacity is there?

  • There are 8 cores in the 2100 Blade, so I would expect the aggregate license limit to be 8 x 500 = 4000. Just be careful you don't have anything running that will drop you out of CMP. Jeff

That'd be the best scenario I'd like to see. But I need to be sure that it is indeed 4000. Guess I will need to open a case about it with F5 Support.

I've asked in the past. It is 500 fps per core (Which means it's calculated separately by each TMM process. Easier that way).

However!!! That '500 tps' is calculated as 5 transactions per 10 ms period... (1/100th of a second).

In any 10ms period the 6th (And subsequent) SSL connection will be dropped with an error.

In practice what you'll usually see is when you manage to go over 250tps per TMM (core) averaged over about a minute, you'll start to see some SSL connections dropped with license exceeded.

Another related question: Will there be warning messages in the log if the licensed limit is reached?

Yes. Every time it happens you will get errors in the ltm log file.
