HA with vcmp guests

HI, I have followed the F5 procedure to create an HA cluster between 2 vcmp guests. all was good, except at the end, the member that was supposed to be the standby one, was actually the active one. the result, I lost all my active member configuration...fortunately, I had a backup and I restored my guest as a standalone again. this happened right after I went to the active member and I added the trust. my question: how to prevent a new member that has to be joined to an existing group from wiping out all the active member configuration.

thanks.

  • Did you sync from the new device to the group and overwrite the working device? There shouldn't be anything special that you need to do when setting up HA to avoid this and it isn't specific to vCMP.

The only thing I can think that might have done something like this is if you had automatic sync enabled. I've seen it overwrite working configs with blank configs on reboots and other things like that. At least they added the option to have it save to disk... Most engineers I work with all agree not to use automatic sync.

Luckily you had a backup, the first step in all of my implementations is to create a UCS and have a backout plan in case things go awry.

SOLVED! It turned out that the new vcmp had a clock 30s ahead of the primary vcmp. Since the auto-sync is based on the first commit date/time, this new vcmp synchronized its empty config to the primary vcmp and therefore wiped out all the content.

to prevent this type of behavior, make sure the ntp is configured and synchronized on all members, then uncheck the auto-sync. hope this helps.
