Upgradation from 11.6.0 HF5 to HF6 fails

Hello Friends,

I want to upgrade my virtual demo lab F5 from 11.6.0 to latest HF6. but after importing it is showing error that no volume or base image is available.

   Existing image:

(tmos) show sys version

Sys::Version Main Package Product BIG-IP Version 11.6.0 Build 0.0.401 Edition Final Date Mon Aug 11 21:08:03 PDT 2014

Need to upgrade in Hotfix-BIGIP-11.6.0.6.0.442-HF6 .

Thanks Prak

  • Hi Prak, It's not possible to install hotfix to the partition, which is active. You need to install base 11.6.0 version to new partition, install HF6 on top of it. Then switch to new partition via System - Software Management - Boot Location and also choose install configuration from current partition, otherwise you will boot to 11.6.0 HF6 but without configuration.
  • You need to have a volume in version 11.6 and then install the hotfix. If you don't you have to install first 11.6 in another volume and then install the HF. You can create a new volume and install directly the HF but you need to have the base image in your big-ip:

    (cfg-sync Standalone)(Active)(/Common)(tmos) install sys software hotfix Hotfix-BIGIP-11.6.0.HF7.iso volume HD.1.X create-volume

If you have the base image for 11.6.0 tmsh will install it automatically on the volume you specify and then it will install the hotfix on top.

Thanks Roman for your reply. I have one question that when there is same major version like 11.6 then why cant i upgrade?
  • You can't intall any software on currently active HDD partition. it's just procedure on F5. When you are upgrading, you need always switch to new HDD partition, where you have new software and reboot. Also F5 recommends to do not overwrite old software, but rather delete and create new HDD partition.
