Cannot run configuration utility through serial console port

Hi all,

I am trying to set the management IP address to a 2100 blade through the serial console port. The blade is part of a BigIP VIPRIOM 2400 platform and it consists on just one 2100 blade.

I connect to the COM1 successfully and the blade shows me the AOM menu (blade baud setting, blade info, blade reseting, ...) if I press ESC (.

The problem is the configuration utility doesn't run when I introduce config on the terminal (putty in my case). I don't even get anything when I press a button. The F5 just replies to ESC ( and nothing else.

My department got this VIPRIOM from another department that made use of it. I am wondering if they could removed the config utility. In this case, is there a way to reinstall the config utility to my F5 again or anyone suggest something else?

thanks in advance!

  • What do you mean by the configuration utility doesn't run ? Did you see the unix login prompt, and were you able to log in ? Are you able to copy the text from putty, and show us the output you get when you try to run config ?

What I mean can be read from this manual chapter: [https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/pg_viprion2400/2.htmlc_viprion_cluster_management_about](https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/pg_viprion2400/2.htmlc_viprion_cluster_management_about) In particular, I'm trying to set the IP Cluster by the way explained in next URL: [https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/pg_viprion2400/2.htmlt_reuse_configuring_cluster_ip_address_config_util](https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/pg_viprion2400/2.htmlt_reuse_configuring_cluster_ip_address_config_util) I don't see anything when I log in by the serial console, neither a welcome message nor anything I type unless I enable the putty echo options. If I type config or tmsh putty doesn't show anything. It just replies something (actually the AOM menu) when I press the combination ESC (: B --- Set baud rate C --- Capture blade console I --- Display platform information P --- Power on/off blade R --- Reset blade Q --- Quit menu and return to console
  • I assume you've quit out of the AOM menu, and hit enter ?

    AOM Command Menu:
B --- Set console baud rate
    C --- Capture blade console
    I --- Display platform information
    P --- Power on/off blade
    R --- Reset blade
Q --- Quit menu and return to console

    Enter Command: q

If you're not seeing the unix login prompt as above, then it is possible that the console baud rate was set on the blade and mismatches the AOM.

It might also be that the blade is powered off - try the P option in the menu, though it should be on by default.

If you power cycle the blade (either through the AOM menu, or by reseating the card), while connected to the serial port (and quit out of the AOM menu), do you see the BIOS and linux kernel messages ?
