Why is [Force to Standby] button in disabled state?

I have got 2 BIG-IPs(ltm 800, Ver. 12.1.0) set in Active/Standby AutoSync mode. The Failover Method is set to [HA Group] in Traffic group settings. I have got some mentainance task (cable replacement) in near future. For that, I need to force the present Active device to Standby. I see the GUI button 「Force to Standby」. I can't figure out why it is in disabled state (can't press). Looks like it can be done through CLI tmsh as well, but, is there any risk factor which leads to malfunctioning of HA feature or syncing?

Can anyone please help me with this? How to force the current Active device to Standby, so that the second one starts operating as Active device without any data/config sync problem.

  • Hello S Blakely,

Thank you for the prompt response. I checked the link you provided. I have very little or no knowledge about Load Aware. When I set Advanced Setup Options > Failover Method to Load Aware, update and click Force to Standby, does the second device (current Standby) automatically turns into Active or do I have to add extra settings to make the second device to Active?

What I want to achieve is:

    1. Perform maintenance task on current Standby.
    2. Force the current Active to Standby, so that the second device becomes Active.
    3. The traffic flows towards the new Active device and it processes them with no problem.
    4. Perform maintenance task on device forced to Standby.

I want to know about the safest way to achieve above, without data/config sync problems.

    Thank You

  • The Standby system will become Active automatically once the Active is Forced to Standby.

You will not need to do anything else.
