UCS Backup Suddenly Failing

I am suddenly getting an error on one of my BIG-IP vCMP units when I try creating a UCS archive file.

Saving active configuration...

sh: /var/tmp/cs_save_pre_script: Permission denied Error executing 'pre-save' configsync script /var/tmp/cs_save_pre_script. sh: /var/tmp/cs_save_post_script: Permission denied Error executing 'post-save' configsync script /var/tmp/cs_save_post_script.

WARNING:There are error(s) during saving. Not everything was saved. Be very careful when using this saved file!

Error creating package Error during config save. Unexpected Error: UCS saving process failed.

I am running 12.1.3.3 on multiple vCMP Guests but am only seeing this issue on a single unit.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Looks more of a permission issue, Have you figured out whats the permission set for /var/tmp/cs_save_pre_script in this unit and on the other unit. Is your role having right permissions to execute those files.

  • The UCS creation should be running as root. Even if it is not, I am logged in with a full admin account. I am able to successfully create a UCS file on the other unit in the same HA pair.

IF this is a permissions issue on those scripts, how and why did the permissions change?

  • I agree to your point that ucs creation is run as root. But have you checked the permissions of the script files thats throwing the error. Would you mind listing them,

    ls -ltrh /var/tmp/cs_save_pre_script

  • -rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 8.0K 2018-04-30 09:06 cs_save_pre_script -rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 1.1K 2018-04-30 09:06 cs_save_post_script

  • Permissions does looks good. I'm unable to find any articles related to 12.1 though. You may wanna run a qkview and upload it to the and see if it picks anything.

  • I am thinking now that the symbolic link for /var/tmp is broken somehow. Here is what get with the same 'ls' command on the other unit:

    lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 13 2018-04-23 15:34 /var/tmp -> ../shared/tmp

I am trying now to restore from the last good UCS. If that does not work, I will just delete the vCMP guest and rebuild it from scratch.

  • Can you please reload mcpd and reboot the device. After reboot please verify backup again.

  • I took a bit of a more extreme approach. I deleted the vCMP and its virtual disk and have recreated it from scratch using the last good UCS backup.

Once I did that and got the HA group re-sync'ed, the UCS backup ran successfully.

Thank you all for the input and ideas.
