SNMP polling of a self IP

Hello everyone,

We have a Big-IP 1500, I want to poll it with Cacti. Is it possible to poll the BigIP through one of its SelfIP ? It's not possible for the cacti server to reach the management interface.

The port lockdown parameter is set to "Allow Default" and the cacti server is allowed in the "Client Allow List", but I haven't got any results when I use snmpwalk directly on the selfIP.

Thx in advance,

  • Yes, it is possible to poll a data interface for snmp. Make sure the self IP is configured to allow snmp, and that the system allows it from your cacti server (in snmp configuration in the GUI or in /etc/hosts.allow)

Thanks a lot for your answer.

I made more tests. Now, I can get snmp response from the self IP but only if I am in the same subnet as the self IP.

The cacti server is in another subnet and it seems that BigIP doesn't know how to route snmp responses back to the cacti server. We only use forwarding VS with this BigIP. Anybody has got experience using both routes and Forwarding VS ?

  • You can add a route to the LTM for destinations off the box. The forwarding VS allows traffic through the LTM, but you need the routes for destinations not locally defined on the LTM.
