Can F5 trigger services on an inactive server in a pool?

Hi All, I received a request where the user needs to monitor two servers in a pool. On his side, the servers are not clustered but serve the same purpose. At a time services are active on only one server and on the 2nd server the service is down. So it will be marked red by LTM.

Is it possible in f5, that if the active member goes down, f5 trigger services on 2nd server and bring it up and start processing the traffic through the secondary server unless the primary pool member comes back up. Also, the backend servers do not have any link to notify the state of other server in a pool.

I can not use priority group activation here, as for this LTM requires all pool members to be in active state and f5 will send traffic only to the specified members at a time.

Please let me know if there is any solution.

  • I don't get it ... Priority group activation would exactly what you want. Just keep both servers online but use a setting of at "Less than 1" with each server in its own priority group. Is it a requirement for one of the servers to literally be offline?

Alternatively, take a look at iCal.

Gonzalex, Yes it is a requirement that only 1 server will be up at a time. If both servers are up then it would be much easier to just use priority group activation. But user requested that F5 should trigger services on the secondary server in case the primary server goes down.

  • Thanks for your response. If I do this way then someone has to manually update the receive string on the secondary server in case the primary goes down. The user requires that if the primary server goes down then F5 automatically trigger services on the secondary server and bring it up unless the primary server comes back again.

It is something like if we can do something like priority group activation on Health monitor i.e. if primary health monitor goes down then it will activate the secondary health monitor which in turn bring up the secondary server. Not sure if we can do something like that ???
